Ask a Senior Season 2 - Women in Tech Series

“Hi, I’m Dung and I’m currently the Acting Data Analyst Team Leader at Cốc Cốc.

Before getting my chance in the Tech industry, I was actually an “Economics” woman. As I studied abroad, worked, and got to engage more with data analysis, in which I found a new passion. That’s when I decided that I will have a "Master's Degree in Statistics and Data Science" to enhance my opportunity in the new area, said goodbye to “Economics” and open up a new page in my career - Becoming a Woman in Tech.

Project after project, data analyzing and applying Machine Learning in many fields: Healthcare, Biomedical, Finance, Real Estate… I was gradually getting better and better, having more experiences as time goes. And when it hits 2020, I returned to Vietnam and joined Cốc Cốc, starting my new opportunity to develop myself further as a Data Analyst. And the truth is, it has been a “thrill ride” with Cốc Cốc, to have my career reach new heights and be in this working environment, full of excitement and experiences with all of these amazing colleagues ^^ which I just can’t wait to get more of!

Being a Data Analyst means you are “telling stories” of users, which can “appear” from a huge amount of data.

So, what is a Data Analyst? To me, it is an everyday job: analyzing data and getting useful insights, helping the company’s product to be better, bigger, and suitable for the ever-growing needs of users. As the sum of data can only get bigger by the day, I find myself with many interesting and unique stories of millions of users, which gives me the excitement to carry on with my career.

Especially, with the most important skill: Storytelling, a Cốc Cốc Data Analyst will start his/her day with these specific tasks:

  • Collecting, analyzing, and providing processed data to the Board of Director and related departments.
  • Visualizing data for regular observations and detections of abnormalities.
  • Analyzing data to gain insights, and proposing plans to support other departments to achieve the business targets.
  • A/B Testing new features, and new products.
  • Creating predictive models (Actually, the Data Analysts just occasionally do these, because our Data Scientists are so “cool”, they do these models already ^^)

The data at Cốc Cốc is pretty diverse in both their contents and forms. Moreover, making decisions based on data is highly prioritized, which is why a Data Analyst at Cốc Cốc will be having a lot of chances to show his/her potential and develop further on the job.

Being a Cốc Cốc Explorer, I’ve found an environment where I can grow better as a Data Analyst.

Joining Cốc Cốc in 2020, I know that I’ve made the right choice.

The cultures at Cốc Cốc are really “lovely”. I’d worked in many kinds of environments, some even have “political” issues, and they were hard for me to adapt to. But Cốc Cốc is different. With the culture of “Mutual Trust and Respect”, everyone gets to be heard and trusted. It didn’t take me a long time to “get along” and enjoy myself in the work and in this environment.

The leaders at Cốc Cốc are really talented and friendly to their employees. Besides, since I joined the company, I’ve received a lot of support, not only from my team members but also from colleagues and Team Leaders from other departments. The scope of work of a Data Analyst involves a lot of people, and a lot of teams, so when there are difficulties found in the source of data, the data meaning… at Cốc Cốc, I was fully supported by everyone, even in particular details for many difficulties. I really think that this spirit, which is highly recommended at Cốc Cốc, has been the stepping for many of my developments: starting from good sources of data, through my own efforts and the support of my colleagues, I’ve created much good analysis for the products of Cốc Cốc.

And a fun fact: The developers of Cốc Cốc are super, super cute ^^!

With many opportunities coming from this profession, all youngsters, especially women, can have a try at it and be successful.

Data Analyst is not 100% about Tech, but not exactly 100% about Business. To be good, or even great at this job, besides the knowledge of Data Science, it will also require you to know about Business Domains to guarantee the quality of your work. That’s why this profession has a high percentage of people coming from many different backgrounds.

Especially, this job is a perfect fit for all women that have a passion for Technology. The chance in this profession is equal for both genders, or at least, Cốc Cốc creates that equality. Since joining Cốc Cốc, I was one of the two women in the department, but now, the number has tripled. That is an example of women in tech getting better chances than before.

So, I have some advice for all: Be enthusiastic with your work, and be enthusiastic to make your passion a success. No matter how talented you are, how well-taught you are, or have any kind of advantage, without enthusiasm, you can complete the picture of your life and your career. For women, there could be a gender barrier in some jobs, but now, they are extremely reduced, right? That’s why just keep trying, living your life to the best, and then eventually, many doors of opportunity in life will be opened just for you!"
