Ask a Senior Season 2 - Women in Tech Series
“Hi, I’m Giang, and I’m currently the Manager of Cốc Cốc User Research, Support, and Community Team. We have an uncommon name that may seem a bit strange to some readers, but to put it simply, you can understand that our job is to research, support, and develop the community of Cốc Cốc users.
It’s really special to me when Cốc Cốc is the company that made me a woman in tech. In the past, I’d worked in an Agency environment, being a User Researcher for many other products. And I couldn’t imagine how my career would have turned out if I be in the technology industry, not to mention, working for Cốc Cốc as a User Researcher in particular. But it’s my destiny and my luck, to be here and work in this company, one of the best tech companies in Vietnam.
“This place is maybe a new start for my career, creating an environment to grow as I want, always support and believe me” - This is what I thought since joining Cốc Cốc, and it’s been two years since then, I’m glad that I’ve never been wrong to put my trust in Cốc Cốc.
What we do is answer all the questions about our “users”
“User Research is the representative of the users’ voice”. That’s why it’s our duty to answer everything about our “users”:
- How are users using Cốc Cốc’s products?
- What can users see in the Cốc Cốc’s products? What is good, and what needs to improve?
- With each new feature, do users feel they need it? Do they understand the feature’s purpose and how to use it? If they do use it, do they like it or not?
However, these are some of many stand-out examples, of the foundation questions of this job. You start being a User Researcher when you start creating questions, which is the most fascinating part of the job!
Besides that, it’s also a part of the job to communicate with our users and with the product development team.
- Imagine that, we are everywhere to connect with our users: Listen to feedback on every channel; chat directly with users; do surveys, and online interviews, or even be side by side with them when they are trying a new product or feature.
- You can also imagine our present when a product or a feature is being developed: In a meeting with the product development team, we contribute insights on what users think, and what users see for the development team to realize their needs.
And because you are “the bridge” between users and the product development team, you will need to be good at what you do: receiving and communicating feedback from users, giving the related party to have the foundation to act accordingly, and making the best out of the product. A User Researcher must have basic knowledge in researching, communication, and problem-analyzing skills.

To grow as a User Researcher at Cốc Cốc, the most important factor is… you!
In the current job market, the User Researcher position is still relatively new. A part contributing to this is User Researching could be combined into tasks of other jobs, and less likely to have the independence to be build-up like a team in Cốc Cốc. That shows how invested Cốc Cốc is in this particular position. Moreover, with a team, the opportunities to recruit and train employees on many levels drastically increase. And because of that, those employees can grow better in their profession, and gradually adapt to the demands of the job market. This is also a good choice for women to develop their careers and follow the Tech industry.
From my personal view, Cốc Cốc is a very transparent environment, where you can choose to hear, to be heard, and receive the attention you want for the best of your personal development. Here, we don’t just “do enough, be enough”. We are encouraged to share. All of your opinions are heard. All ideas are possible, no matter how daring they are. To grow as a User Researcher at Cốc Cốc, the most important factor is… you! You are capable of growing fast and growing strong if you are willing to learn, think, and act.
As a User Researcher, “persistence” and “capability” will determine how far you will go
Being a User Researcher, don’t just settle for the “good” mark. Learn more, listen more, and grow continuously. I always have a saying when becoming a User Researcher: “Make it til the end! Better regret doing it, rather than regret not to”, so to be successful, you must try, and try your best.
If you have curiosity, like analyzing problems, and want to make a difference (This is what all Cốc Cốc-ers do ^^ striving each day to create the best products for Vietnamese people, helping them gain the best out of the digital world), then I believe that you are fit for the job!
And from that, to make a career is your own story, about how “persistence” and “strong will” you are. Having a good background for this job is a plus, and more than that, the ability to learn, research, and participate in courses for your personal development are what determine how great you can be as a User Researcher. Besides that, you will need to question what you’ve learned and bring it into reality. As a User Researcher, “persistence” and “capability” will determine how far you will go.
Another fun fact about this job is you can find enjoyment in only simple praise from your user. That’s what inspires me to stick with this profession, and hopefully, as it’s my enjoyment, it’s what makes me feel happy in my career, it’ll be yours too. Wish you the best while pursuing this career! (Especially, for all the women who love Tech and choose this profession ^^)
